EC Week: Tuesday Breakfast
I woke up with no appetite this morning. Nothing sounded good to me and I really had to force myself to eat. I've never been much of a breakfast person anyway but I know how important it is to get my metabolism going so I try to eat at least a little something within an hour of waking up.
Today I had a banana with a a carton of Greek honey yogurt, a dollop of all fruit strawberry jam and a sprinkle of peanuts. This was adapted from a recipe in Clean Eating magazine. They recommended cottage cheese (which I hate) so I substituted yogurt.
Now, a little bit about Greek yogurt. Plain Greek yogurt is almost always clean regardless of the brand. However, when the flavored yogurts almost always contain sugar, corn syrup, artificial flavors or preservatives. If you've never had Greek yogurt I'll prepare you--it tastes a little like sour cream. It definitely needs "something" added to it for flavor (unless of course you are using as a substitute for sour cream as I do from time to time). The Chobani brand is my favorite and the honey flavor is clean. I found the nutritional content and ingredients for all their flavors on their website and almost all other flavors have locust bean gum in them. Now locust bean gum may be healthier than refined white sugar, but it is very processed (and involves an acid treatment).
If you don't like plain yogurt you can always puree frozen raspberries or some other fruit and mix it in. Honey or agave nectar is also a good sweetener if it still needs a little more flavor.
I had a glass of 100% orange juice with breakfast. I love Simply Orange Juice because it is just that--simply orange juice. Nothing else added. The only way you could get cleaner, fresher juice is by juicing some oranges yourself.
I only ate about half of my breakfast. It was good but I just wasn't hungry. Layla did however enjoy what I didn't eat!
