CE Week: Monday Snack

A Google search for "smoothie recipe" will result in over 1.5 million hits.  Yeah...there are a LOT of smoothie recipes out there.  This is my old standby because it's an easy, low calorie and low fat way to get three fruit servings in one shot!

I've mentioned this Hamilton Beach blender so much that they should hire me to be their spokesperson.  I love this thing.  You can make a smoothie for one or two people with minimal mess to clean up and after it's mixed you just unscrew it from the base and take it with you!  Walmart has them for less than $15.  It does come with a lid.  My hubby has lost mine.  It's probably with the orange peeler he has also misplaced and the Netflix movie that I misplaced and to this day has never shown up around our house.

I used to always use yogurt in my smoothies but I kind of got used to just using fruit and water and now it's rare for me to use yogurt.

Three Fruit Smoothie
--1 orange, peeled and sliced
--1 banana, peeled and broken into about four pieces
--1 cup frozen strawberries
--1 tbsp flax seed (optional)
--water and ice

Add orange and banana to blender with about an 1/8 cup of water (I don't measure anything--I just guess).  Pulse this in your blender until well combined.  Add frozen strawberries and flax seeds and pulse until combined.  Finally add about 1/2 cup of ice.  You may need to adjust your amount of water if you want a smoother smoothie.  I like mine the consistency of a thick milkshake.

Tip:  As I mentioned, there are soooo many ways to make a smoothie.  I've posted a few recipes on here before (though they are healthy they use processed ingredients).  Other ingredients that I like to use include:  frozen blueberries, frozen raspberries, frozen orange slices, milk, yogurt, almond butter, peanut butter, cherries, dark chocolate, honey, lemon, pineapple, watermelon, and even spinach (yes, spinach--makes a healthy "green" smoothie!).  Smoothies make a quick and easy meal or snack and kids usually love them too!
